Explore the impact of this groundbreaking event on educators and communities.

The History of the Symposium: Bridging Native and Hmong Educational Issues

Education plays a pivotal role in shaping understanding and respect among diverse communities. Recognizing the striking parallels between Native American and Hmong experiences โ€” spanning culture, spirituality, and community โ€” the symposium was created to tackle critical educational challenges impacting both communities.

Since its inception, this gathering has served as a platform to address issues of racism, cultural misunderstanding, and the need for inclusive pedagogy. The focus lies on teaching authentic materials about Wisconsin Native American and Hmong history, fostering respect, and empowering educators to embrace multicultural and critical approaches in the classroom.

Act 31: A Legislative Milestone

In 1989, Wisconsin passed Act 31, mandating K-12 educators to teach Native American history, sovereignty, and treaty rights. This legislation arose from racial conflicts tied to treaty rights, shedding light on the gaps in education about Native peoples and their culture.

Today, Hmong communities face similar challenges. Recent violence and ongoing racism against Hmong communities have propelled efforts for a new mandate requiring education about Hmong history, culture, and their involvement in the Vietnam War.

The Symposiumโ€™s Vision

This symposium aspires to create a space for educators to:

  • Learn how to integrate Indigenous and Hmong educational perspectives into curricula.
  • Teach anti-racism effectively.
  • Address policy issues affecting classrooms and community life.
  • Foster understanding, acceptance, and respect across cultural lines.

By bridging the cultural and spiritual parallels between Native and Hmong peoples, the symposium strives to inspire a deeper connection to the histories and experiences of these communities while empowering educators to champion equality and inclusion in education.
