Explore the cultural collaboration between Hmong and Native American communities at the Widening the Circle Symposium, focusing on education, traditions, and shared heritage.

Widening the Circle Indigenous Education Symposium: Hmong and Native American Communities Unite Through Culture

La Crosse, WI โ€” The Widening the Circle Indigenous Education Symposium, held from November 8โ€“11, 2012, brought together Hmong and Native American communities to celebrate their shared cultural heritage. Despite differing histories, these Indigenous communities have found common ground in addressing challenges like education, language preservation, and cultural revitalization.

The symposium, rooted in Hmong and Native American values, offered a space for educators, students, and community members to build relationships and learn from one another. Participants engaged in over 40 workshops on topics such as historic trauma, language revitalization, and Indigenous educational practices.

Highlights included the Young Artists Workshop, performances by regional hip-hop artists like Tall Paul and Tou Saiko Lee, and a keynote by Dr. Gregory Cajete titled โ€œAn Ecology of Indigenous Education.โ€ Attendees also enjoyed traditional foods at the Rethinking Thanksgiving dinner, fostering a deeper appreciation for Indigenous culinary practices.

This collaborative event was made possible by partnerships with the Ho-Chunk Nation, La Crosse Hmong Mutual Assistance Association, UW-La Crosse, and other organizations. It stands as the only national initiative bridging these two communities in such a meaningful way.
