The American Indian Student Cultural Center (AISCC) at the University of Minnesota proudly presented its annual Spring Powwow, a significant event that brought together communities to celebrate Native American heritage and traditions. This vibrant gathering, held on Saturday, March 30th, 2013, in the Great Hall of Coffman Union, was a testament to the enduring spirit and rich cultural tapestry of Indigenous peoples.

The powwow served as a platform for cultural exchange and appreciation, showcasing traditional dances, powerful drumming, and the camaraderie of the Native American community. The event featured an impressive lineup of participants and performers:

  • Emcee: Justin Huenemann (Diné), a University of Minnesota alumnus, guided attendees through the day's events.
  • Arena Director: Larry Yazzie (Sac and Fox) ensured the smooth flow of the ceremonies and dances.
  • Host Drum: The esteemed Meskwaki Nation provided the rhythmic heartbeat of the powwow.
  • Invited Drums: Hoka Hey and Thunderclaw also shared their powerful drumming, with the first three registered drums receiving honorariums.
  • Head Woman Dancer: Jessica Harjo (Otoe-Missouri/Osage/Pawnee), a UMN Graduate Student, led the women dancers with grace and skill.
  • Head Man Dancer: Russell Harjo (Seminole/Pawnee) demonstrated strength and tradition in his lead role among the men dancers.

The schedule for the day included two Grand Entries at 1:00 PM and 7:00 PM, where dancers in their regalia made their grand procession into the arena, a truly spectacular sight. A community feast was held at 5:00 PM, offering a time for shared meals and fellowship. Details for "Specials" were announced at the event, adding an element of surprise and excitement.

This important cultural event was generously cosponsored by the Office of Equity and Diversity at the University of Minnesota, highlighting the university's commitment to supporting and celebrating its diverse student body and the wider community. For those interested in vendor information or general questions about the powwow, the AISCC provided contact details via email at aiscc@umn.edu and phone at 612-624-0243.

The University of Minnesota Annual Spring Powwow continues to be a cherished tradition, fostering understanding, respect, and a deeper appreciation for Native American cultures within the Twin Cities and beyond.
