Discover the humorous origins of the nickname “Walking Eagle” given to President Obama by tribal leaders, and the satirical tale that sparked laughter across Indian Country.

The Story Behind President Obama’s “Walking Eagle” Nickname

When President Barack Obama addressed a major gathering of Native American leaders in upstate New York, his speech was meant to inspire unity and trust. He spoke at length about his vision for uplifting tribal communities and cited his political track record of supporting Native issues while in the U.S. Senate.

At the end of his speech, Obama was presented with a plaque bestowing upon him a new Indian name: “Walking Eagle.” The President accepted it with pride, unaware of the deeper meaning hidden in the title.

Later, when a reporter asked the tribal chiefs how they came up with the name, their explanation revealed the clever satire embedded in the honor.

They explained that “Walking Eagle” is the name given to a bird so full of shit it can no longer fly.

The story has since circulated widely, often drawing laughter and sharp nods of recognition. It has become a piece of political humor that pokes fun at the often empty promises made by politicians — especially when addressing marginalized communities.
