Exploring Heritage: CVCC’s Hmong New Year Celebration and Native American Contributions

The CVCC 2012-2013 Multicultural Series Hmong New Year Celebration beautifully highlighted the intersection of Hmong and Native American heritage. Held annually by the Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) Office of Multicultural Affairs, this event brought together faculty, students, staff, and the community to honor these vibrant cultures and their shared contributions to society.

A Celebration of Unity

The event's theme emphasized the importance of embracing and celebrating multiculturalism. The program opened with the Hickory Police Department Honor Guards presenting the colors, followed by a stirring rendition of the national anthem by Mrs. Shonda Hollis.

From 2:15 to 6:30 p.m., attendees experienced a rich variety of cultural performances, including:

  • A play directed by Kim Stinson, featuring CVCC students.
  • Musical performances by Rev. Raymond Hollis, Raymond III, and guitarist Leah Kennedy.
  • A captivating dance presentation by Challenger High School students.
  • A delightful performance by the Sib Sua Yaj Yuam (Little Girl Dance Group), led by Pachi Xiong.
  • A cultural immersion segment by Ze Vue and Jennifer Yang, showcasing Hmong traditions.

Honoring Native American Contributions

The event’s conclusion emphasized the broader mission of CVCC’s Multicultural Series: to honor Native American heritage and its profound influence on our society. By pairing the celebration of Hmong culture with the recognition of Native American contributions, CVCC fosters understanding and unity across communities.

Why This Matters

Events like CVCC's Hmong New Year Celebration demonstrate the power of cultural exchange in building bridges between diverse groups. The inclusion of Native American contributions in this Hmong celebration highlights shared values, such as respect for tradition and community.
