I Am Hmong! — Oh… So, You Are from Mongolia???

Explore the connection between Hmong ancestry and Native American experiences, reflecting on historical struggles, cultural identity, and resilience.

I Am Hmong! — Oh… So, You Are from Mongolia???

Hmong identity has often been misunderstood, with people mistakenly associating it with Mongolia. This humorous yet thought-provoking blog post reflects on the complexities of Hmong ancestry, cultural pride, and shared historical struggles with Native Americans.

The Hmong people have a rich history that dates back to ancient China. Over time, like Native Americans, the Hmong faced land displacement and oppression at the hands of more dominant groups. While our ancestral roots stem from China, our story echoes the Native American experience — our lands were taken, and our people were scattered across the world.

Historical Roots and Cultural Identity

During the Vietnam War, the Hmong became embroiled in the conflict, ultimately leading many to seek refuge in camps across Thailand or to immigrate to countries like the United States, Australia, and France. In a sense, the Hmong diaspora mirrors the Native American journey of displacement and resilience. As one contributor humorously puts it, "We are the Native American versions of China."

A Shared Narrative of Survival

The Hmong, much like Native Americans, have preserved their culture and traditions despite centuries of hardship. From the construction of the Great Wall of China to their eventual migration across the globe, the Hmong people's legacy is one of perseverance and strength.

Key Takeaway

By connecting historical context with personal reflections, this blog offers a nuanced perspective on Hmong heritage and its parallels with Native American experiences. For both communities, resilience and cultural pride remain at the heart of their identity.

  1. You need to say I’m Hmong. My parents are from Laos, but I was born in a refugee camp in Thailand. Our people got involved with the CIA during the Vietnam War and here I am today. Most people know about the Vietnam. Teach by association just like Hmong are similar to Native Americans.
