Hunted Like Animals: The History of Hmong in the Lao-Vietnam War

The Lao-Vietnam War is a tragic chapter in Southeast Asian history, with the Hmong people caught in the crossfire of geopolitical conflict. Known as America’s "Secret War," this devastating period saw the Hmong recruited by the CIA to fight against communist forces, leading to deadly consequences once the war ended.

A Secret War with Lasting Consequences

The Hmong were invaluable allies to the U.S. during the war. They conducted covert missions, disrupted enemy supply chains, and risked their lives in service of a country that promised freedom in return. However, when the U.S. pulled out of Southeast Asia, the Hmong were left vulnerable to retribution. Thousands were forced to flee their homeland or face persecution.

Hunted Like Animals

Following the U.S. withdrawal, the communist Pathet Lao government targeted the Hmong for their allegiance to the Americans. Entire families were displaced, and many were executed, tortured, or left to starve in remote jungles. Survivors recall being “hunted like animals,” a haunting phrase that encapsulates their suffering and resilience.

A Story of Survival and Resilience

Despite the atrocities, the Hmong have demonstrated incredible strength. Many resettled in countries like the United States, carrying with them their cultural heritage and stories of survival. Today, they continue to educate others about this dark history, ensuring that the sacrifices and struggles of their people are never forgotten.
