Hmong Youth Learn Native American Culture

Discover how Hmong youth explore Native American culture, learning about Ojibwe traditions, history, and their surprising similarities in a unique cultural exchange experience.

Hmong Youth Discover Connections to Native American Culture - On a remarkable journey to explore Native American traditions, 21 members of Hennepin County Libraryโ€™s International Teen Club learned about Ojibwe culture. Led by Hmong Outreach liaison Chaleng Lee, the teens visited the Mille Lacs Indian Museum in Onamia, Minnesota, on March 26, 2011. The field trip was an incredible opportunity for the students to experience a cultural exchange that highlighted both differences and surprising similarities between the Hmong and Ojibwe traditions.

Learning Ojibwe Traditions and History - During the visit, students learned about traditional Ojibwe ways of life, including their methods of building and dismantling homes and their strategies for gathering and hunting food across the seasons. This hands-on experience provided a rich historical perspective on how the Ojibwe adapted to their environment with ingenuity and resilience.

The trip also included a tasting of traditional Ojibwe food, giving participants a deeper appreciation of the culture's culinary heritage.

Spotting Cultural Similarities - For one teen, the trip revealed striking parallels between the Hmong and Ojibwe cultures, such as their deep connection to nature and communal ways of life. These similarities highlight the importance of exploring cultural exchanges to foster understanding and mutual respect.

A Broader Cultural Education - This field trip is part of a broader initiative by Hennepin County Library's International Teen Club to educate youth about diverse histories and traditions. Previous outings included tours of historical Minnesota landmarks like Murphyโ€™s Landing in Shakopee and Fort Snelling in St. Paul.

The program, funded by the Library Foundation of Hennepin County, the Comcast Foundation, and Minnesotaโ€™s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund, continues to enrich the lives of participants with meaningful learning experiences. 1. This is so awesome. I just shared on my post that I worked with a young man who was adopted into the Ojibwa tribe and we shared similarities about our culture with each other. Like attracts like indeed.
