From Miao to Miaozu โ€” Alterity in the Formation of Modern Ethnic Groups

Learn how the term "Miao" evolved into "Miaozu," reshaped by external influences, and why it was once linked to Native Americans in historical contexts.

From โ€œMiaoโ€ to โ€œMiaozuโ€: The Role of the โ€œOtherโ€ in Ethnic Identity Formation

The transformation from โ€œMiaoโ€ to โ€œMiaozuโ€ represents a profound shift in the perception and categorization of ethnic groups within and beyond China. Historically, the term "Miao" referred to various non-Han communities in southern China and parts of Southeast Asia. However, as China began engaging with the global stage, the "Miao" identity was interpreted through the lens of alterity โ€” being defined and reshaped by "the Other."

Interestingly, during this process, โ€œMiaoโ€ was even linked to Native Americans. Early 20th-century writings, such as those discussing policies toward Indigenous peoples in the Americas, referred to Native Americans as โ€œRed Miaoโ€ (โ€œHongmiaoโ€), not due to shared lineage but as a cognitive framework influenced by perceptions of "barbarians" displaced from dominant civilizations. This reflects an evolving cultural hierarchy where both the Chinese Miao and Native Americans were positioned as distant counterparts within the paradigms of โ€œcivilizationโ€ versus โ€œbarbarism.โ€

The shift from โ€œMiaoโ€ to โ€œMiaozuโ€ occurred amidst growing intellectual movements and globalization at the turn of the 20th century. While the designation of โ€œMiaozuโ€ formalized a collective identity, its usage often reflected external constructs imposed by observers rather than self-identified meanings. This dynamic demonstrates how ethnic groups are shaped not only by self-definition but by the narratives constructed by external forces, encapsulating a fascinating intersection of history, culture, and global exchange.
