Five Hmong Christian students were found buried in sand by a river in Dak Lak, Vietnam. Their mysterious deaths raise questions about discrimination and government action.

5 Hmong Students Found Dead In Vietnam: Will There Be Justice?

The Hmong community in Vietnam is in mourning after the shocking discovery of five deceased students buried along the Krong Bong River in Dak Lak province. The tragic case, which remains under investigation, has raised questions about discrimination, neglect, and the safety of ethnic and religious minorities in Vietnam.

According to reports from Hmong Public News, on Thursday, June 13, a fisherman from Cu Dram village stumbled upon disturbing evidence โ€” pants, shoes, and partially buried human remains โ€” prompting authorities to excavate the site. Roughly 50 cm beneath the sand, five lifeless bodies were found. All were Hmong boys between the ages of 13 and 19, and all were students who had been reported missing since Monday of that week.

Victim Identities

  1. Hung Lee (Hooj Lis), 18
  2. Bang Yang (Peev Yaj), 18
  3. Bing Moua (Peej Muas), 19
  4. Vinh Vang (Vee Vaj), 17
  5. Fong Lee (Foom Lis), 13

The boys were from PaoChoua and Ea Ba villages in the CuDram area. All were active students in grades 7 through 12 and were identified as Hmong Christians. The cause of death is still unknown, though local authorities are performing autopsies.

This heartbreaking event has drawn attention to the vulnerability of Hmong minorities in Vietnam, particularly Christians. Whether their deaths were due to an accident, foul play, or hate-motivated violence remains to be seen. Authorities have promised a full investigation, but public trust is shaky.

Local officials have issued a small financial compensation of 2 million Dong (roughly $95 USD) to each of the victims' families. Many see this as insufficient given the gravity of the loss and the lack of transparency in the ongoing inquiry.

As the investigation unfolds, the Hmong community โ€” and the global audience โ€” continue to watch and wait: Will justice be served, or will this tragedy be buried like the boys themselves?
