Experience the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community Wacipi

The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community invites you to experience their annual Wacipi, a significant cultural event held from August 16-18, 2013. This gathering is a vibrant celebration of Native American heritage, featuring traditional dance, music, and community spirit.

For just $5.00, you can enjoy an entire weekend of festivities, with children five and under admitted free. The Wacipi offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the rich traditions of the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community.

Event Highlights


  • Grand Entry: Witness the spectacular Grand Entry each day, a powerful display of dancers in their regalia, honoring veterans and ancestors.
  • Dance Contests: Be captivated by the various dance categories, including Junior (6-12), Teen (13-17), Adult (18-54), Golden Age (55 & over), and Men's Chicken Dance. Dancers will compete for prizes, showcasing traditional and contemporary styles.
  • Drum Groups: Experience the heart-pounding rhythms of invited drum groups, providing the essential musical backdrop for the dances.
  • Flag Raising: Participate in the daily Flag Raising ceremony, a solemn tribute presented by the Vietnam Veterans' Color Guard.
  • Fireworks: Conclude your Saturday evening with a dazzling fireworks display.

Important Information


  • Dancer Registration: Dancers must register by Friday at 7 p.m. Registration closes Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

This event is dedicated to the memory of Chairman Stanley R. Crooks (August 23, 1941 - August 25, 2012), honoring his legacy and commitment to the community.

The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community Wacipi is a family-friendly event. Please note that no alcohol or drugs are permitted, and the organizers are not responsible for accidents, theft, or lost envelopes.
