Miao Ethnic Group Celebrates New Year With Prayers And Tradition

In the heart of Longli County, nestled in the hills of southwest China’s Guizhou Province, the Miao ethnic group welcomes the new year with colorful celebration and deep-rooted spiritual traditions. On February 1, 2012, the community gathered for a folk activity to honor the changing season and offer prayers for an abundant harvest and happiness in the year ahead.

Girls dressed in traditional attire danced gracefully in unison, a symbol of unity, joy, and fertility. Their performance is a vital part of Miao New Year rituals, where music and movement call upon ancestral blessings for the coming months. View Image 1 – Girls Dancing in Traditional Dress

A young Miao man played the Lusheng, a reed-pipe wind instrument unique to the culture. Its sound echoed through the valley, weaving stories of the past with hopes for the future. The Lusheng holds both cultural and spiritual significance, often played during courtship, festivals, and prayer ceremonies. View Image 2 – Young Man Playing Lusheng

In another moving moment, members of the community held ox horns high, part of a ceremonial expression to honor livestock and nature, essential elements in an agrarian society. The horns symbolize strength, sustenance, and the sacred bond between people and the earth. View Image 3 – People Holding Ox Horns
