Operation White Star: The Covert Mission to Train Indigenous Fighters in Laos

Explore the historical significance of Operation White Star, a covert U.S. mission to train Hmong and Yao tribesmen in Laos during the early stages of the Vietnam War.

Operation White Star: The Covert Mission to Train Indigenous Fighters in Laos

Operation White Star, also known as Project White Star, was a pivotal U.S. military advisory mission during the early years of the Vietnam War. This operation aimed to strengthen Laos' defenses against communist insurgencies, particularly the Pathet Lao and North Vietnamese forces, by training the Royal Laotian Army and indigenous Hmong and Yao tribesmen.

The Origins of Operation White Star

Originally launched in 1959 as "Operation Hotfoot," the mission was led by 107 Green Berets from the 77th Special Forces Group (later renamed the 7th Special Forces Group). Under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Arthur D. "Bull" Simons, these soldiers operated covertly, avoiding official U.S. military uniforms due to Laos' neutral status in the conflict.

The operation's primary goal was to equip and train local forces to combat the rising communist insurgency. These efforts were instrumental in creating a network of skilled fighters capable of resisting the Pathet Lao and North Vietnamese Army, which used Laos as a strategic base for its operations.

A Shift in Strategy

By 1961, the geopolitical landscape shifted, and the U.S. openly supported the Vientiane government. Operation White Star was officially named, and American soldiers began wearing their uniforms publicly. This marked a new phase in the mission, where U.S. involvement became more pronounced in Laos' defense strategy.

The Legacy of Operation White Star

Although the operation formally ended in July 1962, its impact lingered. The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) took over covert counterinsurgency efforts as Laos' neutrality was established. The mission demonstrated the United States' commitment to combating communism in Southeast Asia, setting a precedent for future engagements in the region.

Operation White Star stands as a testament to the bravery and collaboration between U.S. forces and indigenous fighters like the Hmong and Yao, whose sacrifices remain a critical chapter in the history of the Vietnam War and U.S. military strategy.
