Honoring Sacred Sage: Understanding Its Significance

What is Sage? Sage is a versatile herb recognized for its diverse applications, including culinary uses, medicinal properties, and its role in spiritual practices, especially prayer.

Who Uses Sage?

Many First Nations people across North America utilize sage for prayer. Much like a Catholic rosary or holy water, sage holds deep spiritual importance for First Nations individuals, serving as a sacred tool for cleansing and spiritual purification.

Why Selling Sage Is Problematic

The act of selling sage is comparable to selling holy water or rosaries; it is considered sacrilegious and deeply offensive to many. For First Nations people of North America, sage is a sacred plant, believed to possess powerful spiritual properties. It is traditionally believed that sage should only be gifted to someone and ideally picked while the person is in prayer, further emphasizing its spiritual significance and the disrespect inherent in its commercialization.
