Half Native, Half Asian, All Service to The People: A Profile of Daniel Yang

Explore the inspiring story of Daniel Yang, a half-Native, half-Asian leader in Minneapolis, bridging cultures with a deep commitment to social justice and community empowerment.

Half Native, Half Asian, All Service to The People: A Profile of Daniel Yang

Daniel Yang, a dynamic grassroots activist in South Minneapolis, stands at the crossroads of two rich heritages: Hmong and Ojibwe. His unique background informs his tireless dedication to public service, compassion for refugees, and advocacy for Native American communities.

Raised with the resilience of a Hmong refugee father and the cultural depth of an Ojibwe mother, Yangโ€™s journey to leadership began with lessons of justice, compassion, and community from his parents. His fatherโ€™s harrowing escape from Laos and his motherโ€™s deep Ojibwe roots instilled in him a mission to uplift others, particularly those facing adversity.

The Up Take Leadership Profile: DANIEL YANG

In South Minneapolis, Yang has been instrumental in revitalizing the Phillips Neighborhood, home to one of the largest Native American populations in the U.S. Through his work with the Native American Community Development Institute (NACDI), Yang spearheaded projects such as the transformation of Franklin Avenue into the vibrant American Indian Cultural Corridor. The corridor now showcases Native art, culture, and pride, while welcoming visitors with Dakota and Ojibwe language banners.

Yangโ€™s impact extends beyond local initiatives. At just 15, he worked in Sudanese refugee camps, connecting with displaced communities and amplifying their voices through his photography, which gained global attention. His commitment to self-determination and social justice has taken him to indigenous movements in Latin America, further shaping his vision for community-led empowerment.

For Daniel Yang, true greatness lies not in personal wealth but in creating lasting change. Whether working with elders to preserve Native languages or empowering families to build their futures, Yang embodies leadership rooted in love, service, and shared humanity.
