Honoring Survivors: Restoring Sacred Trails At The 7th Annual Pow-Wow

View Image

The 7th Annual Minnesota Indian Women's Sexual Assault Coalition (MIWSAC) Pow-Wow, held on April 30th, 2013, at the Grand Casino Hinckley, was a powerful and moving event dedicated to "Restoring the Sacred Trails of Our Grandmothers: Seeking Solutions to End Sexual Violence." This vital gathering, co-sponsored by the Mille Lacs Band Family Violence Prevention Program, served as a beacon of hope and healing for survivors of domestic and sexual violence.

The Pow-Wow provided a safe and supportive space for the community to come together, honoring those who have endured immense challenges. The evening, from 7 PM to 10 PM, resonated with the powerful rhythms of the Host Drum, Little Otter, and welcomed all drums and dancers. Acknowledging the importance of their contributions, honorariums were provided for both drums and dancers, fostering a vibrant and respectful atmosphere.

The event was skillfully guided by MCs Richard Milda and Comanche Fairbanks, with Pete Gahbow serving as the Arena Director, ensuring the smooth flow of the ceremonies. A central and moving element of the Pow-Wow was the original artwork by Juanita Blackhawk, which visually represented the theme of healing and restoration.

The Pow-Wow was more than just a gathering; it was a testament to the resilience and strength of survivors and a collective commitment to ending violence within communities. It highlighted the ongoing efforts of organizations like MIWSAC to provide support, advocate for change, and empower individuals on their healing journeys. The event served as a reminder that through unity, cultural celebration, and shared purpose, we can work towards a future free from violence.
